Who this is for, and who it is not for.

This case fits when

  • You have held a green card for five years, or three years while married to and living with a U.S. citizen
  • You have lived in the country most of that time, with no single trip of six months or longer
  • You have filed your taxes, and registered for selective service if that applied to you
  • No arrests, convictions, or unresolved court matters
  • You can read, write, and speak basic English, or qualify for an exception

It does not fit when

  • You need a disability waiver of the English or civics test (N-648)
  • You are in removal proceedings or have a prior deportation order
  • There are arrests, convictions, or a past misrepresentation to the government
  • Back taxes are owed with no payment plan in place
  • Your green card was obtained through a case that is itself in question

Eligibility review

The questions that trip people up, answered before you file.

A denied N-400 costs the government fee and about a year. Nearly every N-400 denial is visible in the file before it is filed. That review is most of the value of hiring a lawyer for this case.

  1. 01Time as a resident. Five years with the card, or three if married to and living with a citizen the whole time.
  2. 02Trips abroad. Physical presence for at least half the period, and no trip of six months or longer without an explanation the officer will accept.
  3. 03Taxes. Filed every year you were required to. Owed taxes need a payment plan in place and receipts.
  4. 04Selective service. Men who lived here between 18 and 26 were required to register. We check whether it applied and what to say if it did.
  5. 05Character. The N-400 asks about arrests, citations, lies to the government, child support, and more. Every answer is reviewed against the record before you sign.
  6. 06English and civics. Who has to take the test, who is exempt by age and years of residence, and who gets the shorter civics version.

The interview and test

One appointment. Three parts. Rehearsed by video first.

The officer reviews your application line by line, then tests English and civics. Nationally, most applicants pass on the first attempt, and preparation is why.

    The application review

    The officer goes through the N-400 with you under oath. Anything that changed since filing, a trip, a move, a ticket, comes up here. We update the file before the interview so nothing surprises either of you.

  2. 02

    English

    Speaking is tested through the interview itself. Reading and writing are short sentences drawn from a published vocabulary list. We drill both.

  3. 03

    Civics

    Questions drawn from the government's published set, asked aloud. Our prep session works through the current list and the version that applies to you.

  4. 04

    If a part is failed

    You get a second appointment for the failed part. A second preparation session is inside the flat fee. A denial after that is not, and we tell you the options at that point.

  5. 05

    The oath

    Approval leads to an oath ceremony, sometimes the same day. We monitor the case until you have the certificate in hand.

Where your money sits

Four stages. Earned one at a time.

Your $999 goes into a client trust account and moves to the firm only when a stage is completed. Written statement at each stage. Unfinished stages refunded if you stop.

Questions

Asked before almost every N-400.

Many people file on their own and do fine. The value of a lawyer is in the review before filing: travel, taxes, selective service, and the character questions. A denied N-400 costs the government fee and about a year. At $999, most people decide the review is cheaper than the risk.

A trip of six months or more raises a presumption that you broke continuous residence. Some trips can be explained with evidence that your life stayed here. Some reset the clock. We look at every trip before you file, because the officer will.

Most applicants do. There are exceptions to the English test based on age and years as a resident, and an easier civics test for some older applicants. Medical exceptions require a separate form (N-648) that is outside our scope. We tell you which rules apply to you during the eligibility review.

Up to ninety days early, as long as every other requirement is already met. We calculate the earliest filing date from your card and your travel history and tell you the exact day.
