Preparing for a Marriage-Based Green Card Interview

Interview preparation is not memorizing matching answers. It is understanding the record that was filed, identifying what has changed, and being ready to answer questions truthfully.

Read the appointment notice first

The notice controls the date, location, and documents USCIS expects you to bring. Follow it carefully. Bring the notice, government-issued identification, and the originals or updated documents the notice requests. If the notice conflicts with a generic online checklist, the case-specific notice deserves immediate attention.

Review the entire filing, not only the marriage evidence

Both spouses should know what was submitted. Review biographical information, addresses, employment, travel, prior marriages, immigration history, financial sponsorship, and the relationship evidence. The purpose is to find mistakes or changes before the officer does, not to memorize a script.

Update the record honestly

Life continues after filing. Couples move, change jobs, travel, open accounts, have children, and experience other significant events. Gather appropriate updated evidence and be prepared to explain changes. If a change may affect eligibility or admissibility, obtain legal advice before the interview.

Expect ordinary details to matter

An officer may ask how the relationship developed, how the household operates, and whether the documentary record fits the testimony. Genuine couples can remember events differently. A truthful “I do not remember” is better than an invented answer. A meaningful inconsistency should be addressed carefully rather than dismissed.

Preparation should reduce surprise, not produce theater

A lawyer can review the file, identify issues likely to draw attention, organize updated evidence, and explain interview procedure. No ethical lawyer can promise the decision. The objective is a complete, accurate, and intelligible record.
